Germany's Energy Transition: Electricity Rationing on Horizon Amid Network Overload Concerns

By: David Powell-Wiffen

Germany intensifies its shift towards green technologies like heat pumps and electric cars, electricity demands are set to soar. However, the country's local networks are not adequately prepared for this surge, leading to the Federal Network Agency's proposal to ration electricity from 2024. With an estimated shortage of around 14,000 kilometers of infrastructure, this controversial plan aims to prevent network overloads.

The rationing would involve disconnecting heat pumps and electric cars from the grid during peak times, a move that could disrupt everyday life and businesses, particularly for those reliant on electric vehicles, like healthcare services.

As the details are ironed out, it calls into question: Can the country's infrastructure keep pace with its ambitious green transition?
