Hermès launches artificial leather bag made from Mushrooms

Leather production is bad for the environment and cruel to animals - so say those who oppose it. Fake fur rather than real fur has been on the agenda for many years and now with new technology, even the luxury goods industry is getting in on the act for leather.

There are many different technologies as described in this article which are creative, but every company working in this space faces the same central challenge: matching the quality and texture of real animal leather. The fashion industry’s expectations are particularly high. “Nobody is willing to sacrifice quality and performance for sustainability,” says Matt Scullin, CEO of MycoWorks. “Animal leather is the original performance material.

Now Hermès has sprouted a novel vegan leather alternative that will soon be used to fashion at least one of its storied accessories. The French luxury house has partnered with California-based start-up MycoWorks to develop a sustainable textile made from… mushrooms.
