According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the war in Ukraine is a factor in encouraging a quicker transition to renewable energy. In October 2022 the organization projected demand for fossil fuels falling or plateauing going forward in all scenarios it calculated, while it expects the adoption of renewable energy sources to speed up.
As this infographic from statista shows, global use of coal for electricity generation in 2021 outweighed that of renewables by 8 percentage points. By 2027, this is predicted to flip, with renewables accounting for 38 percent of global electricity production compared to 30 percent from coal.
As can be seen from the Statista graphic below, the IEA has upgraded its forecast for 2050. In the 2021 forecast renewables were set to provide 26% of the worlds global energy, the 2022 forecast shows an acceleration of this to 29% by 2050.
